What exactly is Core?

When you are attending a Pilates class, you will always hear the phrase:  Engage your core!

The core is a combination of muscles that surround the midsection of the body, helping you to maintain balance, strength and stabilizes the spine.  A weak core leaves your body vulnerable to lower back pain and injury.

It is the bridge between the upper torso and the legs.  It is the source of stability during daily activities and during exercise.

We are talking about the muscles that are deeper than the global muscles:

  • The TA = Transverse abdominus

  • The Pelvic floor

  • The diaphragm

  • The Multifidus

  • The Psoas

These muscles work as a team and when they contract they act like a corset to support pelvis and lower back.
